Alumni profiles

Bianca Rolim Alves da Silva, development engineer at Höganäs AB

My bachelor’s degree is in: Industrial Chemistry from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

I graduated year: 2014

My master’s degree is in: Organic Chemistry from Lund University

I graduated year: 2017

After graduating, I started working at Höganäs AB as a development engineer in the R&D department. I work with the development of organic materials that are used alongside metal powders and analytical methods for their analysis. The company is a world leader in metal powder technology and manufactures powders for different applications, such as press and sinter, brazing, metal injection molding, 3D printing, surface coating, etc. Most of these applications require certain organic additives and my team’s job is to make sure we have the best solutions to meet the market’s demands.

The best things with my education and time in Lund:

At my job, I have had great use especially of the knowledge within chemical processes and sample characterization I acquired during my education. The best with my master’s program was the hands-on approach, with many problem-solving tasks, and how I was able to get a lot of lab experience.

Why should prospective students choose to study a Master’s in Chemistry at Lund University?

Lund is a small but very international city and you get to meet students from all over the world. If you are looking for a quality education in a quintessential student city, Lund university is a very good option.

Pegah Nosrati, R&D scientist at Galenica

My bachelor’s degree is in: Chemistry from Lund University

I graduated year: 2014

My master’s degree is in: Physical Chemistry (Within the Nano Chemistry Master’s Programme “Organizing Molecular Matter (OMM)”) from Lund University

I graduated year: 2016

I now work at the pharmaceutical technology company Galenica AB in Malmö, Sweden. Here I work as a R&D Scientist with focus on developing pharmaceutical formulations; transforming active pharmaceutical ingredients from being only raw materials all the way to the shape of a capsule, tablet, cream and so on. It’s almost like doing magic, with the difference that we apply research and science in its purest form.

From my education, I have had great use especially of my problem solving skills, my hands-on experience in working in a professional laboratory environment and my extensive knowledge about risk and safety and how to minimize these parameters in my daily work.

The best things with my education and time in Lund:

Understanding really how the world and everything around us works on a nanometer scale – to be able to see the things that are invisible to most people.

Also, I greatly appreciate the close and relaxed communication with well-known teachers and professors, and last but not least all the great memories that I will take with me through the rest of my life; from pre-exam studies at the Chemical Centre in the middle of the night to all the parties, laughs, good times and life-long friendships that I’ve made during the journey.

Why should prospective students choose to study Chemistry at Lund University?

Because you will obtain a first-class education from a first-class university and make memories of a lifetime while doing it! I enjoyed every second of my five years in Lund and the Chemical Centre.

Jesper Schwarz, analytical chemist at Bioglan Quality Control

My bachelor’s degree is in: Chemistry from Lund University

I graduated year: 2017

My master’s degree is in: Organic Chemistry from Lund University

I graduated year: 2019

I work as an analytical chemist at Quality Control (QC) at Bioglan. Bioglan is a pharmaceutical company that make creams and lotions. I work at the QC-department analysing raw materials and products. The work is very varied, requiring many different types of analysis. It is also very fun to work at a pharmaceutical company, where the work is structured and documented in a different way than at university.

Something very valuable from my education has been the large amount of time spent working in a lab. To have a lot of lab experience is sought after by employers, and it has been easy to find a job after finishing my degree. Everyone that started their Master's degree with me have found a job after graduation.

The best things with my education and time in Lund:

Many good lecturers and that most of the labs are good. It was incredibly fun and a great freedom to study at university, they were very social years.

Why should prospective students choose to study Chemistry at Lund University?

Apart from being a fun and instructive education, there are great opportunities to go on exchange studies. I went to Nottingham in the United Kingdom for one semester. It was both fun and useful to experience chemistry education abroad and a different lab.

Jonathan Ekstrand, chemist at Kempartner AB

My bachelor’s degree is in: Chemistry from Lund University

I graduated year: 2017

My master’s degree is in: Physical Chemistry from Lund University

I graduated year: 2019

I work as a chemist at Kempartner AB in Vadstena, Sweden. Kempartner are a developer and producer of chemical engineering products in cleaning, laundry, dishwashing, hygiene and car care. Among other things, I work with development of new products, writing and updating safety data sheets, ecolabelling and reporting to different authorities.

Thorough knowledge of chemistry, combined with good laboraotry practice, learned during my education have been very useful when developing new products. The experience studying and familiarising yourself with a completely new subject has also been very useful for ecolabelling and reporting to various authorities, as these were completely new things for me.

The best things with my education and time in Lund:

The combination of students that was as interested in studying as I was the the close proximity to teachers and professors when you needed their help. Not to mention the wonderful student life, both at the Chemical centre and the university as a whole.
